Kahua Update

We are excited to add more projects to Kahua in July! Forty-eight (48) additional projects will be migrated into Kahua to join the ten (10) pilot projects. All new projects are now being created in Kahua as well. Training began in June 2024 and is continuing throughout July. Training guides and videos can be found in the Training Section of the Capital Programs website. More training videos will continue to be added.

Japan House Tea Ceremony

Members of the Capital Programs and Utility Services teams enjoyed a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at UIUC’s Japan House in early May. It was a wonderful experience to learn more about the history of tea ceremonies and participate in making tea. In addition to tea ceremonies, Japan House offers public and private events and beautiful adjoining gardens. UIUC is engaged with MDC Architects to design an addition to Japan House, befitting its beauty and cultural significance.

Campus Instructional Facility

The Campus Instructional Facility (CIF) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a 124,000-square-foot center for flexible learning. The building, completed in 2021, has pursued net zero energy verification, which would put the University a step closer in fulfilling their Climate Action Plan to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across campus by 2050.

Campus Instructional Facility (CIF) - exterior

Complete with 23 classrooms, a 500-person auditorium, a cafe, and an open space with flexible partitions, the building serves as a hub for teaching, with a focus on collaboration and new technologies for hands-on learning. The facility utilizes many of the UIUC I-Flex strategies and has the first 175 seat classroom-in-the-round that provides a very intimate setting for a large group of students.

Powered by UIUC’s Solar Farm, the building uses a radiant heating and cooling system, integrated with the largest geothermal energy system on campus. The University partnered with developer Vermilion Campbell in a public-private partnership (P3) project, and, in addition, the University’s Student Sustainability Committee contributed $375,000 toward the project’s geothermal exchange system.

Completed in 2021, the Campus Instructional Facility (CIF) received LEED Zero Energy in March 2024 and LEED BD+C NC Platinum certifications in June 2023. Its design received the highest honor bestowed by the Illinois Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2022. University representatives were on hand to receive the award and celebrate the project’s success.
